SlayWigs Care Guide: How to Keep Your Crown Flawless

Proper care is essential to maintain the beauty and longevity of your wigs and weaves. Follow these simple steps to keep your styles looking fresh and fabulous:

1. Washing Your Wig/Weave

  • Frequency: Wash every 10–15 wears for synthetic wigs or every 7–10 wears for human hair wigs. For weaves, wash your hair every 1–2 weeks depending on build-up.
  • Steps:
    1. Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb or wig brush, starting from the ends and working upward.
    2. Use lukewarm water to wet the hair, avoiding hot water, which can damage fibers.
    3. Apply a sulfate-free shampoo, working in a downward motion—never scrub or twist.
    4. Rinse thoroughly and follow with a hydrating conditioner.

2. Conditioning and Drying

  • Conditioning:
    • Apply conditioner mid-shaft to ends (avoid the wig cap or weave base to prevent loosening). Let it sit for 3–5 minutes before rinsing.
    • For deep conditioning, leave the conditioner on for 15–20 minutes once a month for human hair wigs or weaves.
  • Drying:
    • Pat gently with a microfiber towel to remove excess water—do not wring or twist.
    • Place the wig on a wig stand to air-dry. Avoid blow-drying synthetic wigs as it can damage the fibers. For human hair wigs or weaves, use a low-heat setting if blow-drying is necessary.

3. Styling Tips

  • Heat Styling:
    • For human hair wigs or weaves, use heat tools at a low setting and always apply a heat protectant. Avoid using heat on synthetic wigs unless labeled “heat-resistant.”
  • Combing and Brushing:
    • Always use a wide-tooth comb or wig brush specifically designed for wigs. Detangle gently, starting from the ends and working your way up.
  • Styling Products:
    • Use wig-safe or lightweight, alcohol-free styling products to avoid buildup.

4. Storage

  • When not in use, store your wig on a wig stand to maintain its shape. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. For weaves, braid or twist the hair before storing in a silk or satin bag to prevent tangling.

5. Night Care

  • For weaves, wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf or bonnet before bed to reduce friction and tangling. A satin pillowcase works well for wigs, especially if you prefer not to remove them overnight.

6. Avoiding Damage

  • Avoid Overwashing: Washing too frequently can strip your wig or weave of its natural luster.
  • Limit Chlorine and Saltwater Exposure: If swimming, wear a swim cap or rinse and condition your hair immediately afterward.

7. Maintenance for Longevity

  • Synthetic Wigs: Use detangling sprays designed for synthetic hair to refresh and maintain the fibers.
  • Human Hair Wigs and Weaves: Schedule regular professional deep-conditioning treatments to maintain softness and shine.

8. Know When to Replace

  • Synthetic wigs typically last 4–6 months with proper care, while human hair wigs can last a year or more. Replace your wig when it starts losing shape, shedding excessively, or looking dull despite proper care.
